The coral reefs surrounding Saint Kitts is created by generations of calcium carbonated based corals. All corals need suitable places to grow on upon which they can attach them selves, one suitable surface is lava stone. When a coral polyp dies its skeleton is used by other coral polyps to attach them selves on and this is how coral reefs grows. Coral reefs can only develop in warm waters such as the water in the Caribbean Sea. The waters in this area are ideal for polyps to form coral reefs, due to the warm and very clear water. Clear waters and tropical sun results that the corals are exposed to a lot of light. And the corals use the energy from the sunlight to grow bigger. The coral polyps them selves are not capable of photosynthesis, instead they form relationship with several types of microscopic algae that do the photosynthesise in their place. This is just one example of the great complexity of the vibrant reef ecosystem. Saint Kitts and its surrounding waters gives you the experience of a life time. Reef fishes of all sizes as well as all kinds of hard and soft corals and sponges. You can also encounter larger animals, such as sharks and dolphins.
