Chrisoula K Wreck - Dive site - Egypt

A guide to scuba diving at the Chrisoula K Wreck

Dive site: The Chrisoula K

Location: Egypt, Sharm El Sheikh to Hurghada

Dive type: Reef dive, boat dive, wreck dive

Skill level: Beginner

Visibility: Average underwater visibility in the Sha’b Abu Nuhas area and around the The Chrisoula K is 30-35m / 98-115 ft.

Depth: Minimum depth to the Chrisoula K wreck is 4 m / 13 ft (at the bows). The maximum depth to the seabed is 27 m / 89 ft (at the stern).

Water temperature: The water temperatures at the Sha’b Abu Nuhas reef and around The Chrisoula K wreck depends on the season. February is the coldest month to scuba dive here, with water temperatures around 20° C (68°F). During the hot summer, water temperatures rise to be around 27° C (81° F) in September.

Dive site information: The wreck of The Chrisoula K is resting at the Sha’b Abu Nuhas coral reef. The reef just about reaches the surface and is hard to spot from a boat or ship that isn’t very close to the reef already. Many shippers have found this out the hard way, since the very well frequented shipping lane called the Straits of Gobal pass over the Sha’b Abu Nuhas reef.

The Chrisoula K was carrying floor tiles from Italy to Jeddah when she ran aground at the Sha’b Abu Nuhas coral reef in August, 1981. Fortunately for the crew, an Egyptian naval base is located not too far from the reef and the whole crew was rescued. When scuba diving at the Chrisoula K you can still see the Italian tiles. The Chrisoula K is fascinating enough to keep you satisfied during several scuba dives, and she also offers a good variety of dives which makes her suitable for beginners as well as experienced wreck divers. For the novice, exploring only the external parts of the Chrisoula K is recommended. Penetration of a wreck always requires special training.

Marine life: Many hard and soft corals are today growing at the Chrisoula K. Especially the decks at the stern, now in a nearly vertical position, has been filled with many kinds of corals. Chrisoula K has also managed to attract her very own vibrant reef fish population that has abandoned the nearby reef to live in and around the wreck.
