Scuba Diving In The Caribbean

The Caribbean is the dream destination for many scuba divers from all over the world. In this section of Scuba Diving Point you will find articles regarding all the great dive sites that can be explored in the Caribbean Sea.

A majority of the Caribbean islands have been colonies of European nations, and some of them are still considered a part of Europe politically. Others have become independent states, or formed countries together with nearby islands. The same is true for the Central American coastlines along the Caribbean Sea where Spanish as well as British colonisation have had a large impact. Learning a little more about the history of the islands you plan to visit during your Caribbean scuba diving vacation is a good idea, since the colonisation of the Caribbean has affected such things as language, legal system and currency. It should be noted that many regions have been subjected to more than one European country throughout their history.

On Caribbean islands and coastlines once a part of the British Commonwealth, as well as those that are still British overseas territories, you can expect the inhabitants to speak English and the area is sometimes referred to as the “Anglophone Caribbean”. Examples of such destinations are Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, the Bay Islands of Honduras, the British Virgin Island, the Cayman Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Montserrat, Saint Croix, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago and the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Examples of scuba diving destinations where the Spanish culture have had a large impact are the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Cuba and Jamaica. The Cayman Islands, Trinidad and the Bay Islands of Honduras have also been colonised by Spain for longer or shorter periods of time. Haiti is another example of a Spanish influenced Caribbean island is Haiti, but due to ongoing violence and political instability it is currently not a popular destination for scuba divers.

France has also have large interests in the Caribbean, and examples of Caribbean islands with a visible French heritage are Dominica, the Dominican Republic, Grenada, Haiti, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, St Kitts and Tobago. Martinique and Guadeloupe are still French overseas departments, and this is where you find such popular tourist destinations as Saint-Barthélemy and the northern part of Saint Martin. Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Montserrat, Sint Eustatius and Saint Croix have also been colonised by the French, but only for shorter periods.

In addition to Great Britain, France and Spain, several other European countries have colonised the Caribbean and left their marks on the area. Present day United States Virgin Islands was for instance once known as the Danish West Indies, and the French island named Saint-Barthélemy/St Barths was sold to Sweden in 1785. The Netherlands Antilles use to make up the so called “Dutch West Indies” together with Aruba, the Virgin Islands, Saint Croix, Tobago and the Bay Islands. The Netherlands Antilles is still an autonomous part of the Netherlands.
